As a trickster figure, the Joker is a figure of fluid identity, a shapeshifter and unstable container. Throughout history, the joker appears as a jester, a fool, in the commedia dell’arte as Arlecchino with a wooden sword, as Hanswurst in German Stegreifkomödie, as the arch enemy of Batman, as a playing card or recently a Prepaid Online MasterCard® by Novum Bank Limited. Playing on all sides, he contains both emancipatory figures and supervillains, fools and figurations of international finance capital.
The title (eng "the sword is absurd and the dagger is stupid. We are the fighters of the spirit") quotes Victor Hugo's opening speech at the International Literary Congress in 1878.
