It is certain that there is a land here, but its size and the limits of its boundaries are uncertain

The rectangular impression references the size of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (eng. "Theatre of the Orb of the World“), the first modern Atlas written by Abraham Ortelius in 1570. The title refers to a description of one of its maps showing Terra Australis (Latin: '"Southern Land‘“), a hypothetical continent first posited in antiquity and which appeared on maps between the 15th and 18th centuries. Its existence was not based on any survey or direct observation, but rather on the idea that continental land in the Northern Hemisphere should be balanced by land in the Southern Hemisphere.
