BOUNCE, LISTEN
Installation / performance
Marked basketball, text, chalk, plaster
BOUNCE, LISTEN is a work that relates to activities such as sports, skating or graffiti through which communities engage with architecture and therein occupy, transform and activate formerly dysfunctional or purely transitory sites within the urban fabric. Its title is also its score. It is a piece to be performed for oneself by bouncing a basketball within the marked area while listening to the resonating acoustics of the space. It is located below a concrete bridge, itself a non-place in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern, a city development project in the city’s 22nd district. As the sound waves of the ball’s impact on the ground bounce back and forth between bridge and ground – akin to the movement of the ball itself –, they create a resonating drone with a clear pitch. Due to the special acoustic features of the surrounding architecture, these resonances are audible only to the player him*herself. The print on the basketball has been turned into a relating poem using a permanent marker.
