Whistling and blowing into golden tongues, a sculpture based on three layered harmonica mechanisms, I was guided by thoughts about how sound could enclose or point to some imagined kind of song rather than enacting it. call is about introverted and closed-off modes of performance, withdrawal, privateness, fragility, solitude and, in a way, also masculinity. With images of shepherds and cowboys in mind, that the bells and harmonica sounds brought with them, the piece seeks to explore the double meaning of whistling and humming as both means of communication and kinds of inward-performative sonic practices, sounds one produces only for oneself. Like listening to the sonic imagination of someone whistling a tune, the piece carries with it an imaginary song that seems to only exist as a deconstructed score beyond what is actually audible.
Rather than a finished piece, call is a work that can adapt itself to a space and incorporate a variety of sculptures, electronic sounds and installative gestures to shape its given stage.
